The oversight
People spend serious effort on the exterior: landscaping, paint, hardware, plantings. All of it is designed for daylight. After dark the house is a dark shape with a porch light on it. Half the hours anybody sees the front of your home are after sunset for a good part of the year, and there is nothing to see.Put together, none of this is exotic. What it requires is treating the evening view as something worth planning, which is the part almost everybody skips. The houses that look good at night are almost always the ones where somebody thought about it.
The elements that carry at a distance
From a moving car or across the street, nobody sees detail. What carries is silhouette and contrast. The list is short: the roof edge, the front door, and something with texture. A lit roof edge draws the outline. A lit entry gives it a focal point. An accent or two stops it reading as a facade.
Warm white is the setting that matters
The purchase conversation is usually about holidays. The actual use is mostly ordinary evenings. Warm white reads as intentional rather than festive. That is the setting responsible for the curb appeal argument, and it is the one people forget to ask about.
Consistency matters more than any single fixture
Nothing cheapens a facade like one bluish fixture next to a warm one. Two different whites on one elevation are immediately noticeable, even to people who could not name the problem. Getting every source on one consistent white does more for the look than adding fixtures does.
Businesses are judged from the road too
The same logic holds for a commercial building, with a more direct consequence. Lit buildings get remembered. Dark ones get forgotten.
Beyond the front elevation
Almost every plan is written for the front elevation only. Very few people approach a house straight on. They see it at an angle as they go by. An outline ending mid building looks

The front door is worth more than any other single fixture
The single highest value target is the front door, every time. The door anchors the whole front, and lighting it organizes everything else. It is also the one piece of lighting that does obvious practical work, since that is where anybody arriving has to go.
